We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —“We are most deeply asleep at the switch,” wrote Annie Dillard, “when we fancy we control any switches at all. When the Senate voted to send new aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan two months ago, House Speaker Mike Johnson took no action. With the help of Democrats, the House approved aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan on Saturday. Writing for CNN Opinion, he emphasized that there are legal principles that require universities to prohibit expressions of antisemitism.

9 to 0 — I’m going to say that again — 9 to 0, ruled that states can’t keep Donald Trump off their ballots. It’s how — Trump has said to his loyalists, I am your retribution, so maybe we should just look at this as a blueprint for retribution. He’s going to end up — when he gives his big convention speech, he’s going to end up making promises on economic policy, domestic policy, and so on. ross douthatSo here’s why I’m sort of — Carlos, especially to your point — like, trying to focus us on the sharpest possible conflicts. But if most of the country’s political and emotional energy is instead focused on Trump himself, rather than real, actual debates, then I think Trump is winning, period, and the country is losing.

It’s a terrifying prospect that could become a reality for Anna and millions of her peers across Myanmar after the military junta activated a mandatory conscription law for all young men and women. “While wounded and increasingly desperate, the Myanmar military junta remains extremely dangerous,” Tom Andrews, United Nations Special Rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, said in a statement. “People know for sure that no matter what is written in the conscription law, they will have to go to the front lines. “In Myanmar, young people are not safe anymore,” said Maung Nyein, who also requested to use a pseudonym for safety reasons. “Our villagers won’t join the military forces or leave the country, instead we will join our resistance forces.

Israel and Hezbollah each have lessons from their last war, in 2006, a monthlong conflict that ended in a draw. A United Nations resolution ending the war called for withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon and a demilitarized zone on Lebanon's side of the border. Israeli political and military leaders have warned Hezbollah that war is increasingly probable unless the militants withdraw from the border. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah hasn't threatened to initiate war but warned of a fight “without limits” if Israel does. Costs would rise sharply if there's war with Lebanon.

Read previewThe Republican Party has politicized critical US aid to Ukraine, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the radical rhetoric terrifies his people. "There are definitely some voices, radical voices from the Republican party, and they are straining Ukrainian society," Zelenskyy said during a group interview at Davos on Tuesday with outlets including Business Insider. Advertisement"Some radical voices are just stressing us out. AdvertisementThat type of inflammatory rhetoric, along with the current roadblock in Congress, has put Ukraine on edge. Out in the open, though, the rhetoric remains, and aid to Ukraine is still in danger.

The train departed and crushed my right arm. AdvertisementAdvertisementA second train came into the station and crushed my right leg below the knee. Beyond that, how can I give money to Transport for London when they have taken no responsibility and offered no financial compensation?

A CERTAIN style move terrifies countless men with a passing interest in fashion. Some would sooner streak through Times Square than be seen sporting this “faux pas.” The avoid-at-all-costs abomination? Wearing black and navy together. With a discipline that would impress a four-star general, guys both young and old abide by such staid rules on not mixing certain colors. Ask them to wear, say, green head-to-toe and you might witness a conniption.

The original tweet referred to the Islamic State and a potential “backlash against peaceful Muslims.” The edited version circulated after the shooter at a Nashville school on March 27 was identified as transgender. “Norm was ahead of his time,” states a tweet sharing the image (here), (archive.is/BC4b7). Both Steven Spielberg and Noam Chomsky have expressed their doubts about artificial intelligence. Spielberg said that AI requires humans to surrender creative expression and autonomy to AI. Both Spielberg and Chomsky separately gave their views on how AI could have serious repercussions on mankind's ability to create and think independently. Chomsky, a linguistics professor, cognitive scientist, and philosopher, believes that AI tools like ChatGPT have "sacrificed creativity for a kind of amorality." In the piece published on Wednesday, Chomsky, Roberts, and Watumull wrote that AI systems like ChatGPT are incapable of independent thought.
James Gorman, CEO of Morgan Stanley, met with the Saudi crown prince at the onset of the pandemic. The young royal kept sneezing during the meeting — and Gorman's fear of a deadly pathogen began to grow. He was in the royal palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, seated to the right of the country's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman. Given their recent experience with a deadly virus, Gorman took the caution of his Kuwaiti hosts as a sign that the West was underestimating the dangers of this one. And now, as Gorman chatted with the controversial 34-year-old crown prince about ways Saudi Arabia could diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil, the young royal kept sneezing.
Over 500 students are flooding the Supreme Court on Tuesday to support student-debt relief. The Supreme Court will hear arguments and likely make a final decision on the relief in May or June. Today, over 500 students have gathered on the steps of the Supreme Court to fight back against any attempt to restrict such freedom. "Our government must relieve borrowers of the crushing weight of student debt which will keep an entire generation from reaching their full potential," he continued. All eyes now turn to the conservative-majority Supreme Court, which will likely make a final ruling on Biden's debt relief in May or June.
The cases that challenged Biden's debt relief are headed to the Supreme Court on Tuesday. "If the Supreme Court sides with the extremist judges, millions of Americans' monthly costs will rise significantly when student loan payments resume later this year," the report said. Still, Republican lawmakers have been adamant that canceling student debt broadly is unfair to those who already paid off their loans or did not borrow for college. Lawsuits are causing 'financial anxiety for vulnerable borrowers'Failing to implement debt relief would put a strain on younger and older borrowers alike. Now, all eyes turn to the Supreme Court, which is expected to hand down rulings in the two cases before the end of its term, typically in late June or early July.
Google is in a weird position after the release of ChatGPT by a rival firm. Its unveiling of ChatGPT rival Bard was accordingly an odd mix of FOMO and fear. But unlike ChatGPT, which has now amassed 100 million users, Bard will only be available to "trusted testers." Hence the FOMO Bard reveal — on the eve of a competing announcement from Microsoft to show off an AI-enabled Bing. For Google, which sees AI as "the most profound technology we are working on today," Bard can't be the latter.
Millennials have lived through two recessions and might be facing a third as their parents retire. Talking money with your parents isn't going to be fun, but it's a good idea to know their status. A major part of that preparation is figuring out where the money will come from to care for their parents. Decide who can provide the financial caretakingSo should millennials be saving for their parents' care? But Williams, the financial planner, doesn't advise millennials to focus their saving efforts on their parents' care.
Automakers are starting to realize that the only way to guarantee lithium supplies is to own or have a controlling stake in the source. "It's the only way you're going to have the edge and guarantee you can make EVs over the next 20 years," Moores told CNBC. Nickel will also be important for automakers, in addition to lithium, Moores told CNBC. "Lithium and nickel are really what terrifies EV makers," Moores told CNBC. It is a land grab," Moores told CNBC.
Hardman does research on microplastics — tiny pieces of plastic debris that are broken down from larger plastic items. Microplastics are often too small to pick up or even notice, but they are everywhere: in the air, dust, and rain. Laura HardmanPlastic is a relatively new pollutant, so there's still a lot we don't know about it. In the lab, my team of researchers and I focus on the sources, effects, and fate of plastics in the ocean. The simple answer is we don't know what plastics might be doing to us, but I've started to get really concerned.
McCarthy also says he plans to create a House select committee on China, the first since the late 1990s. House Republicans will also investigate the origins of the coronavirus and “the CCP’s role in the spread,” the blog post said, although it is unclear whether that investigation would be part of the select committee. Tensions were further inflamed in August by Pelosi’s Taiwan visit, the first by a sitting U.S. House speaker since 1997. The most volatile issue in U.S.-China relations is the status of Taiwan, which Beijing has not ruled out seizing by force. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi speaks with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei, Taiwan on Aug. 3, 2022.
Shopify has previously used outsourced customer-support agents in India as well, the employees who spoke with Insider said. The TaskUs contractors appear to be taking on roles throughout Shopify's support organization, including on "high-tiered" teams and on teams that work with Shopify Plus merchants. Shopify is ramping up its outsourcing after laying off about 1,000 employees — many of whom worked in support — in July. The breach affected dozens of Shopify merchants, including Ledger, which makes cryptocurrency wallets. Should You Buy An EV Now?

Why do I want an electric vehicle? You want an electric vehicle because they are generationally improved products: quieter, quicker, more refined, more efficient, offering superior vehicle dynamics, less maintenance and lower per-mile operating costs. For them per-mile costs will be measured in pennies, not quarters. According to the U.S. EPA, the average EV produces about two-thirds fewer emissions than an IC car in a well-to-wheel analysis, which counts emissions from producing/delivering either fuel or electricity. On a life-cycle basis—including end of use—an EV’s total emissions are less than half that of a comparable gas-powered vehicle.
